LEO is a new type of composite system that meets the high fire safety requirements set in the offshore, maritime and construction businesses and in manufacturing railway vehicles whilst simultaneously avoiding any negative influence on mechanical key performance indicators usual in current fire protection systems.
LEO uses optimised NCF layers (glass, carbon, aramid or hybrids), special LEO infusion resins and optional differing core materials depending on client specifications and the intended use of a component. A LEO Protection Layer is always the final component. The individual components are matched as client specifications and specific use dictate. They have no influence on either the mechanical characteristics or drapability of the system.
In addition to the factors of weight and mechanical systems, fire protection plays a major role in the production of rail vehicles. In Europe, the qualification of components is prescribed according to fire safety standard EN ISO 45545. LEO meets the highest fire protection requirements, reducing smoke formation in case of fire and not releasing any toxic substances. At the same time, negative effects on mechanical core values are avoided during a fire; these are commonly observed in conventional fire protection systems. LEO is particularly interesting for the railway industry because it is now possible, for the first time, to use LEO to produce fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) – which have certified fire properties according to EN ISO 45545 – using infusion technology according to DIN SPEC 91326.
